Powder Epoxy for One-Shot Cure, Out-of-Autoclave Applications: Lap Shear Strength and Z-Pinning Study

نویسندگان

چکیده

Large composite structures manufactured out-of-autoclave require the assembly and bonding of multiple parts. A one-shot cure manufacturing method is demonstrated using powder epoxy. Lap shear plates were from epoxy glass fiber-reinforced plastic with four different cases assessed: secondary standard adhesive film, epoxy, co-curing, co-curing plus a novel Z-pinning method. This work investigates lap strength in accordance ISO 4587:2003. Damage mechanisms fracture behavior explored digital image correlation (DIC) scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. VTFA400 had load at break 24.8% lower than Co-curing increased by 7.8% compared to bonding, co-cured pinned joint resulting 45.4% increase. In cases, DIC indicated premature failure due resin spew. SEM areas large amount fiber pullout both these pinning delaying phenomena strength. highlights potential for out-of-autoclave.

Cure Cycle Optimization of Rapidly Cured Out-Of-Autoclave Composites

Out-of-autoclave prepreg typically needs a long cure cycle to guarantee good properties as the result of low processing pressure applied. It is essential to reduce the manufacturing time, achieve real cost reduction, and take full advantage of out-of-autoclave process. The focus of this paper is to reduce the cure cycle time and production cost while maintaining high laminate quality. A rapidly...

EFFECTS OF pH ON LAP-SHEAR STRENGTH FOR ASPEN VENEER

This study is one part of a whole project called “Impact of Extreme pH of Structural Adhesives on Bond Durability.” The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of pH on wood– adhesive bond strength and chemical change in aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx) wood caused by extreme pH exposures. Aspen veneer lap-shear samples were tested for maximum stress (N/mm) and wood failure (%) after e...

Manufacturing and Shear Response Characterization of Carbon Nanofiber Modified CFRP Using the Out-of-Autoclave-Vacuum-Bag-Only Cure Process

The interlaminar shear response is studied for carbon nanofiber (CNF) modified out-of-autoclave-vacuum-bag-only (OOA-VBO) carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Commercial OOA-VBO prepregs were coated with a CNF modified epoxy solution and a control epoxy solution without CNF to make CNF modified samples and control samples, respectively. Tensile testing was used to study the in-plane shear pe...

One-shot, one cure with genome editing for dyslipidemia.

One of the most inspiring examples of rapid bench-to-bedside translation has been the development of proprotein conver-tase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitory antibodies for the reduction of serum low-density lipoprotein and prevention of coronary artery disease. Astute genetic analysis of gain-of-function mutations in patients with elevated low-density lipo-protein (LDL) levels 1 built the ...

In Situ Cure Monitoring of an Out-of-Autoclave Prepreg: Effects of out-time on viscosity, gelation and vitrification

The cutting, lay-up and bagging of out-of-autoclave (OOA) prepregs for composite part fabrication can take from several days to weeks, depending on the desired part size. This period of ambient temperature “out-time” induces resin polymerization/cross-linking, and affects critical physicochemical phenomena such as minimum viscosity, gelation, and vitrification. Therefore, the capability to moni...
